Lawn Care

Below we have laid out a seasonal lawn care guide which will help you get to that perfect lawn.

We have come up with a plan which you can follow as little or as much as possible, but obviously the more we can do the better the end result.

We have laid it out on a month by month basis but please remember the weather can and usually does affect things in this country.

This is to be used as a guide only and should you require more help and advice please ask us.

January

- Get your mower serviced and any other garden tools that need sharpening servicing.

Better to do it now when you do not need them.

- Remove any leaves or other debris from the lawn area.

February

- Same as January if not already done.

March

- This is when you will likely be doing the first cut of the year (weather dependent).

Remember to put the mower on a high cut so you are only taking off the tips.

- Cut and shape the lawn edges.

- Weather allowing you can also apply the first feed of the year along with a Moss

Killer.

April

- Scarifying and raking can now take place.

- Mowing will probably increase, lowering the height of the mower gradually.

- Overseeding and Topdressing.

- Aeration should take place which will helps air, water and nutrients into the ground.

- Cut Lawn edges

May

- Increase mowing (should be done once a week)

- Apply a selective weedkiller to the lawn. Make sure it is a calm dry day.

- If needed you could also apply a fungicide to the lawn.

- Cut lawn edges

June

- You may need to start watering if rain is scarce.

- If it is dry the mower height may need to be raised, but keep mowing

- Add nutrients, lawn feed (liquid feed if no rain about)

- Remember to keep moving items you may have on the lawn (paddling pools,

furniture, kids toys).

July

- Keep watering

- Feed and weed the lawn

- Don’t cut the grass too low.

- Growth should have slowed down slightly so cutting can be less frequent.

- Use a spot spray weed killer to eliminate any unwanted lawn weeds.

August

- Again keep watering if necessary. Young lawns will need more watering than

established ones.

- Make sure you keep the cut height slightly higher as longer grass deals with dry

weather better.

- Keep using the spot spray weedkiller to keep on top of any unwanted weeds.

- Apply a liquid lawn feed if your lawn is looking a little tired. Make sure if it is dry

that it is also watered in.

September

- This is when you need to start thinking about Autumn Lawn Care.

- If the rains return you will need to cut more often again and you can also cut slightly

lower again.

- Apply an Autumn fertiliser.

- Scarifying of the lawn should be done.

- Overseed and topdress

- Great time to install a new lawn both turf and seed.

October

- Get rid of any worm casts

- Remove any debris including leaves from the lawn area.

- Neaten up any edges

- Weather allowing keeping cutting the lawn but raise height of the cut.

- Last chance to apply an Autumn fertiliser.

- Still good to lay turf but not seeding.

November

- Remove leaves and other debris from the grass

- Get rid of worm casts

- If ground not frozen still time to aerate.

December

- Same as November
